Grinyó valley

Conversations with the Montsant Mountain Range

The northern side of the farm house at Mas d’en Gil overlooks a narrow valley which opens up towards the light coloured cliffs of the Figuera and Montsant Mountain Ranges. They seem to be holding a conversation between a child and wise old grandparents. In the middle of the valley there are small “coster” (steeply sloping) vineyards planted with old Garnatxa (Grenache) and Carinyena (Carignan) vines. The higher slopes are planted with almond trees which blossom at the end of winter to offer a pink and white display.

Altitude: from 280 to 300 m above sea level
Main Aspect: North-facing
Area: 15 hectares (37 acres)

Climate

Climate

The valley is well ventilated and receives a northerly wind which is strong and unforgiving, especially during the colder months of the year. Shady hollows are accompanied by sunny vineyard “costers” or slopes which enjoy the afternoon sun. The microClimate of this place balances out its cooler, more humid side with its light and hot personality.

Terroirs

Terroirs

Red Llicorella (slate), breaks easily and gives the soils here their distinctive reddish tones, although there are also some darker slates found here.

Crops

Crops

Vineyards here are limited, less than two hectares in total planted towards the centre of the valley, giving the grapes lots of concentration and a unique personality. Close by, wide terraces are used for cereal production. The higher Areas, the steeply sloping almond groves make up a typical landscape.

Areas

Areas

The lower area, between the almond groves and the “costers” of steeply sloping vineyards is where our mule Clara calls home – her stable and field. Not far from here is the main natural spring of the estate, La Font del Fontà. This ancient water source used to provide water to the residents of Bellmunt. Not surprisingly, Mas d’en Gil was known for years as the Mas d’en Fontà (Fountain Farmhouse).

Wines

Wines

The old vineyards of Grinyó are for the most part, the origins of Clos Fontà, Mas d’en Gil’s top wine. This wine has adopted the name of this spring as a homage to the old name of the estate.
